George VI stamps bear the likeness of King George VI of the United Kingdom. George VI reigned from December 1936 until his death in 1952. He was not expected to inherit the throne, but ascended the throne when his older brother, Edward VIII, abdicated in order to marry a twice-divorced American socialite. For political and religious reasons, Edward VIII could not marry this woman and remain King, so he choose to step down. George VI was also the last Emperor of India and the last King of Ireland.
